Deaton's history

In 1981, Brant Deaton purchased the former Green's Supply, a lumber yard and hardware store just south of Mexico, NY on Route 3. As the business grew, Brant recognized the need for a similar business in the village of Pulaski, NY. In 1983, he purchased the former G.L. Thomas & Sons Feed Mill in Pulaski and converted the building into a 3,700 square foot retail space with extensive warehouse and storage space.

After experiencing strong growth in the Pulaski community, Deaton's became a member of the Ace Hardware buying co-op and was thus able to access the broadest assortment of hardware, plumbing, electrical, and paint supplies in the industry. In order to accommodate the resulting sales demand, the store was expanded into the former warehouse space, to a total of 6,600 square feet of retail space, followed by the construction of a 4,000 square foot pole barn for the warehousing of building materials. Deaton's grew from 3 employees in 1992 to 10 full-time and 9 part-time employees by 2004.

In 2004, it became clear that Deaton's had outgrown its space at the Lewis St. location, so the search began for a new location. In early 2005, Deaton's began work on redeveloping the former P&C grocery store on Port St. in Pulaski. The grand opening at the new store was in October of 2005.

The community has responded extremely well to the move, and the foot traffic at the new Deaton's exceeded all expectations. With the increase in sales volume, so was there an increase in staff. Today, the Deaton's Ace Hardware employs over 20 full-time and 10 part-time employees. Additionally, the increased space has allowed Deaton's to begin offering Carhartt workwear, Stihl outdoor power equipment, work boots, marine and RV supplies, mattresses, gifts, housewares, equipment rentals, and many other items which allow us to more completely serve our customers' needs.

Deaton's consistently gives back to the community that has made them such a success. Through donations, scholarships, and sponsorships, Deaton's has helped numerous local organizations, individuals, school programs, churches, and community events. As Deaton's continues to grow, and the Deaton's staff continues to make Deaton's the destination for Helpfulness in Northern Oswego County, Deaton's will continue their long-standing precedent of generosity to local causes.

As your local Ace Hardware store, Deaton's is a member of the largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative in the industry. Ace Hardware began in 1924 when a small group of hardware store owners in the Chicago area decided to work together in negotiating better prices from their suppliers so that they could in turn bring better prices to their customers. They also found that the name of this cooperative effort could be used on their stores to help customers to identify the value that the Ace stores offer; they could also pool their advertising budgets together and simply advertise the Ace brand. Since that time, Ace Hardware has grown to include more than 4,600 stores in 50 states and more than 70 countries. As part of a cooperative, every Ace Hardware store remains independently owned; in other words, Ace Hardware does not own your local Ace store, but that store is a member and owner of the Ace Hardware cooperative.
